Itsukushima Shrine, Miyajima

The main building of Itsukushima Shrine was constructed in 593 and in 1168 underwent renovations that gave it the impressive form it has maintained to this day. Registered as a World Cultural Heritage Site, this is a bold and uniquely designed structure facing outward toward the sea, and backed by stands of primeval forest. It is visited by over 4 million Japanese and foreign tourists every year.

Shimanami Kaido

Shimanami Kaido

Otherwise known as the Nishiseto Expressway, the Shimanami Kaido is a 60-km long suspended roadway system comprising nine bridge sections that connect through several islands on the Inland Sea from Onomichi City in Hiroshima Prefecture to Imabari City in Ehime Prefecture. Travelers may utilize this roadway to cross the Inland Sea on foot or by bicycle while viewing the spectacular island scenery and enjoying the salty ocean breeze.
